Standpoint Theory- Material, social and symbolic circumstances of a social group shape what members of that group experience as well as how they think, act and feel.
Culture is not experienced identically by all it's members, there is hierarchy and sub groups to every culture. Socieities have unequal power in relationships, there can be no correct or singular perception of cultural life. Culture is reflected differently through each person.
Power Structure- People with lesser power have a more comprehensive view of social life.
ARROGANCE BREEDS IGNORANCE
Speech Community- People in a group understand goals and styles of communication. This is not shared by people outside the group. Communication is only understandable in cultural contexts, that is what defines rules and meanings.
Communication Rules- Regular patterns in how communication is used and interpreted and what it's functions are understood to be in a particular group, these rules are socially constructed, not determined by forces beyond our control.
Troubles Talk- Clear patterns of miscommunication.
Personal Stories- Accounts that announce how people see themselves and how they wish to be seen by others.
Personal Rituals- Things we do individually to define ourselves.
