Once there was a way
"Sleep pretty darling, do not cry and I will sing a lullaby"
Ok, it is official, BB King is the fucking man. I didn't know what to expect last night when I went to see BB with John, Ian and Shannon...but man, he was kicking. The opening act was this 14 year old kid who played the blues with a backing band at least 3 times his age, but he was phenomenal for his age. My god, this kid was good...but his vocals were a bit prepubescent, like he can help that. When BB's band came on though, man they were amazing. They did about 3 songs without BB, just kinda having a loose structure of a song with each member doing a solo, most of which kicked ass. His band had a full horn section on top of the average bass, drums, guitar and piano/organ. When he came out, I was a little worried because he couldn't walk that well and sat down the entire concert and had to have his guitar handed to him. My worries were soon calmed though, as he was much more lively than I expected. He was dancing, telling jokes, telling stories upon stories, giving the crowd wisdom, had us sing along to certain parts, had a schtick with his band which was almost like a standup routine and of course he sang and rocked on guitar. His voice has not gone down in quality at all, it still sounds as raw and powerful as it did when he was young. His skills as a guitar player have also not diminished, this guy was the epitomy of a showman...he was just entertaining as hell and it was amazing to see a blues legend live. I came out feeling absolutley blown away, something I definately didn't expect. It is now my duty to get BB on vinyl because I dug his music so much, his band was so damn tight and completely on. The horn section...my god the horn section was cooking and the bass player was beyond words amazing. Ian nearly wet himself during the bass solos they were so good. All I know is, I am so damn glad I went to this thing and anyone that missed it should regret it, it was that good.
On other music news, I am trying to see Ben Folds on April 26th at an in-store performance in NY's own Tower Records. If you are one of the first 500 people to buy his album on that day, you will get a braclet and will be able to come back and see an in-store performance/ meet and greet with the man himself. The only catch? The store opens at 9 AM and we are gonna be there hella early. I think our train from Hamilton leaves at 4:20 AM and yes we are obsessed freaks(myself, erica, her friend and anyone else that wants to come...come on and ask if you wanna come) for going, but I think it is about time I meet Mr.Folds himself and this seems like the best way.
Final music note, I am seeing Ben Folds on May 10th and Weezer on May 11th with an assortment of very nice folks. The Weezer show though is a group rocking affair with the eclectic and wonderful group of Jake, Rachel, Katie, Katie's and my T7 comrade Lemor. Oh, I also kicked my spanish tests ass.
