OK.. fine.. I will admit that the guy has a kickass first name. And I discovered Hootie around the time I got sick of classic rock 'n roll, so I never really gave them a chance.
I define emo as follows:
1) Music existing between 0 and 100 beats per minute that is either performed acoustically or with clean (in opposition to distorted or overdriven) instrumentation. It has the lyrics as the main driving focus of the song, sometimes sacrificing the musicianship of the background band or the guitar, and the song is attempting to convey, either as a warning for others or as a therapy for the singer, how a particular event shaped the shattered emotional landscape that is the psyche of the songwriter.
2) Any category of music that is overy whiny or annoying
